How to Get Hired
Interviewers are
finicky. You will never really know the reason you didn't get hired.
This piece will focus on interview tips you can implement
to increase your chances on how to get hired, including
researching companies, providing powerful answers, and writing a
value statement.
Research
different companies
This is a piece of
great advice that job seekers take for granted, and that is
unfortunate.
Taking the time to learn about the company serves several purposes:
(1) the more you learn about the company, the more excited you'll be
about the interview, (2) Or on the flipside, you may realize there
isn't a fit, and you don't have to waste your time going on the
interview, and (3) you'll be able to develop insightful
questions that will demonstrate to the interviewer you're
interested in the position.
Provide
short answers with tangible results
Your responses
should be interesting and run short - less than a minute. When you
answer an interview question, look at the interviewer's nonverbal
communication to see whether you are running too long.
Signs to look for
include the following: (1) the interviewer looks at his or her
watch, (2) the interview attempts to interrupt you and move on to
the next question, and (3) the interviewer grins and widens his or
her eyes as a way of saying, "get on with it."
Do some
soul-searching to decide your value statement
Write a
personal value statement that covers your core beliefs. This
is an advantage because when you write the statement, you'll
find companies that match your work values. And if you have
ever worked for a company where you weren't happy because your
way of doing things didn't mesh with the company's way, you
know how difficult it was to make it through the day.
Bottom line:
There are many layers of job hunting. anything you do to
prepare for the job interview will increase your chance
of landing a job offer. The worst thing you can do with
your career is leaving it in the hands of fate. Take a
proactive approach and make an effort to put your best foot
forward.
